Best door lock recommendation?

Are there any locksmiths here?

What would you recommend for (brand/model/etc) home doors to make them
more secure? (ie., not allow novice pickers to open the lock)

Medeco
Schlage Primas
Abloy

Medeco - hands down.

Keep in mind that if you do not reinforce the door jamb and door you've wasted your time.

Any wonderful lock is only as strong as the door and jamb they are installed into. - Most doors can handle no more than a few strong blows (hand ram or fatty law enforcement officer).

Bi-lock is the first choice because of the design. Only one US distributer, Wholesalelocks.com.

2nd choice is Mul-T-Lock.

Forget Medeco, Schlage, and other "High Security Locks", they can be bumped and picked.

Hmm - Medeco can be bumped? - I will need to research that.

:s1:

Edit - I stand in awe of a 12 year old girl!

Yes, me do lots of research. BiLock is the bomb. Check it out:

Thanks all for the info. Great start for my research...

Now I will start another thread asking about reinforcing door jambs. :)

Not quite on topic - but check out SOSS invisible hinges.

You can install your main doors to open outwards, without exposing the hinge pins to tampering. And an outward opening door will stymie "dynamic entry"... assuming that it is a heavy duty door - that is.

Another enhancement - build an airlock / vestibule. It adds another barrier to intruders, as well as saves energy.

No bumping an Abloy, they dont have pins only discs.

The Youtube on Bumping the Medeco, Probably very poor key code selection &
sidebar was removed.

I use both Abloy and Medeco padlocks. Both are very high quality, but the stainless steel abloys are superior IMO. There is no way anyone but a pro could ever pick an Abloy, and even then they would still have trouble. The boronized hasps are very resistant to bolt cutters and have ruined many a pair. I have seen several attempts with no success.

We use Abloy door locks as well.

I have opened a locked passage door (no key when bought house and kid locked the door) with a 3/8 drill bit in a few seconds. Very effective to carry your cordless drill up the front door, the Bilock looks like it can be opened just as easily.

A cordless drill with a 3" holesaw would be a very effective bypass around a locked door no matter what the lock. Just drill the hole by the handle, reach inside and unlock the door. Even metal doors wouldn't be a problem...

Home security should be like an onion..., many layers to delay thieves and have them seek easier targets.
